Using Tortoise SVN

Since Joomla is continuously in development, nightly builds of Joomla are available for download. These contain bug fixes and enhancements made since the last stable release of Joomla. However, be warned that some items added or fixed may result in new bugs arising. If you still wish to obtain the latest version in development, download and install Tortoise SVN as follows:

Downloading and installing Tortoise SVN

  1. Go to http://tortoisesvn.net/downloads where you will be redirected to the http://sourceforge.net website. Select the appropriate installer file for your PC and save the file to your local PC Installing Tortoise SVN - Download Screen Image
  2. Double-click the saved installer file to start the installation. The Welcome screen appears. Click on Next Installing Tortoise SVN - Install Screen Image
  3. On the License Agreement screen, read and if you agree to the terms, select the radio button for I accept the terms in the License Agreement then click on Next Installing Tortoise SVN - Install Screen Image
  4. The Custom setup screen will load. The default settings should only be changed if you are comfortable doing so. When ready, click on Next

  5. Now the Ready to Install screen is loaded. Click on Start to proceed

  6. Tortoise SVN will be installed and the Completing screen will load. Click on the Finish button to close the screen Installing Tortoise SVN - Install Screen Image
  7. Your system will need to be restarted before Tortoise SVN can be used Installing Tortoise SVN - Install Screen Image

Using Tortoise SVN to obtain the latest build of Joomla 1.5.x

Now that Tortoise SVN has been installed, you can use Windows Explorer to access the SVN for obtaining the latest build of Joomla, simply by following these steps:

  1. Using Windows Explorer, create or designate a folder for retrieving the latest build of Joomla 1.5 into from the SVN. In this example, we have created a folder named Latest SVN Build to use. NOTE: you may use any folder you desire, even a different folder each time if you wish Using Tortoise SVN - Using Screen 1 Image
  2. Right-click on the folder and select Tortoise SVN : Export Using Tortoise SVN - Using Screen 2 Image
  3. On the resulting screen you are prompted to enter:

    URL of repository - this is the URL from where the latest Joomla 1.5.x files will be downloaded (i.e. exported from). The value to enter is http://joomlacode.org/svn/joomla/development/trunk
    Export directory - the location to download/export the files to. This should default to the folder you selected (i.e. C:\wamp\www\Latest SVN Build)

    Leave all other settings to the default

  4. The first time you attempt to download files from the repository, you will be prompted for a username and password, so enter the values anonymous and anonymous. Also, select the checkbox for Save authentication. Click on OK to proceed

  5. A window will load as the download begins, with progress messages being displayed. Once the download has completed, a message with an action of Completed will be displayed in window Using Tortoise SVN - Using Screen 5 Image
  6. If you now view the contents of the C:\wamp\www\Latest SVN Build folder, you will see files for a Joomla 1.5.x installation. You can rename the folder as required or copy the files from this folder to a new folder of your choice under C:\wamp\www Using Tortoise SVN - Using Screen 6 Image
